They are named Fady,
Charbel, Simon, Georges, Ahmad or Elie, and they are the men of my life. Who
are they, you may ask ? They are my favorite bartenders in town. You can
wipe the smirk off your face right now, because, these guys, over the past
couple years, have been nicer to me than any other man. Yes, I love them,
simply because they make my life… better. And somehow, they have learned to
love me as well.
(Now, I do quite often get this reaction when I say I
am friends with bartenders : “Girl, are you an alcoholic?” So what, if I
like to have a glass every once in a while? )
What makes me different ?
Not much actually, other than the fact that I take the time to get acquainted and know them better. The bar is a beautiful place. It’s my happy place. I don’t just walk up the bar to order my drink ; I greet them, and ask them how they are. I make sure I remember their names, and that they remember mine. And most of the time, they will appreciate the effort, and give me the best treatment.
Some of the people around me pretend that my looks are what makes me more deserving. Well, ok, in life, attractive people get better treatment. That’s just the way it is. And in bars, I admit, it is often true. But bartenders get hit on a lot. Every night. All the time. So, being a « hot chick » is not enough. Best way to get great service? Be nice.
The human interaction is what makes bartenders feel like they're people too. To those who have not taken the time to sit at a bar and chat up with the bartender, I suggest that they try it at a place where they are a regular. You will soon meet some of the most humorous, sarcastic, generous, entertaining, hard-working people; some may even become your friends. For me, it always begins with the sense of humor.
What’s the best way to get a bartender’s attention?
The wrong way is snapping your fingers or yelling. Smile and try to make eye contact. The calm person who looks nice and smiles is surely going to get better service than that impatient guy who just needs his drink! Be nice. They are likely overworked and under-slept.
It has its perks…
Getting on a bartender's good side can mean a big difference in the way you are going to be treated. And let’s admit it : doesn’t it taste better if the person serving your drink genuinely cares about you ? Remember, the bartender wants you to be happy, after all. A happy customer is a « comeback » customer. So be a good customer, your service will improve because of it.
Also, they know everyone in town ! Be sure your bartender probably has a fairly solid network of friends/regulars, so you immediately have access to meeting a bunch of people. That is good for your networking.
Once they know you well, they will stop you from being naive or overly trusting with other customers. Bartenders see the worst in people on a regular basis, they won’t let you get taken advantage of. They will look out for you.
They pamper you like no one else can: they know what your favorite drink is; there will always be a stool waiting for your royal behind.
They are there to lift your spirits when your heart gets broken. And also to celebrate when you get a promotion. (Which means more shots in both cases.)
You see them so often that they notice when you do something to your hair.
Unlike everyone else in your life.
Plus, they never judge you.
But it also has its inconvenient…
Now, there is a downlow to being friends with bartenders… It is not all glitz and glamour. Indeed, suddenly you find yourself drinking every day of the week, trying new drinks just because they made them for you, and loving all of them…
People will get jealous that you don’t even have to order.
For a considerable amount of time, you’re probably going to be drinking more than anticipated. My bartender friends are devilishly talented at this. And they know I can’t say “no” to a doodoo shot...
And last but not least, your phone is filled with photos which might hurt your reputation a bit…
The key to booze heaven: time and patience
You can’t expect to instantly become friends with the whole staff, it’s actually quite a process. If you smother bar staff and are constantly talking to them, they are just going to think you’re weird. But don’t give up, because if it takes effort, the payout exceeds the effort put in. Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all.
Yes, they’re hot, but cool down, girl!
Let’s face it: bartenders are HOT. The minute a man steps foot behind that bar, they immediately become attractive. It’s like they release some kind of magic that just triggers something in our brains. Sure, hitting on bartenders is tempting. But while this makes us ladies tingle, we have to remember: it makes other ladies tingle too. And if you decide to discreetly note your phone number on that credit card slip, be cool about it, you are probably not the only one to do so.
