Every year on the 8th of March, International Women’s Day is held, to celebrate the amazing social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women, and to campaign for greater progress towards gender equality, as inequality still persists around the world. So what can you do to celebrate IWD ? Here are a few ideas to get you started.
- TAKE ACTION FOR CHANGE
This year’s official them of IWD, #EachForEqual calls for the creation of a gender equal world. We are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions, so why not actively choose to challenge the stereotypes, bias, perceptions that the world has kept in place forever? Join a pledge, a movement, stand up, speak out, be heard.
- SPEND TIME WITH A WOMAN YOU ADMIRE
Whether it is your mom, a friend or a colleague, now is the time to reach out to that woman and treat her to lunch or coffee.
- PROMOTE GENDER DIVERSITY IN YOUR WORKPLACE
Only 50% of women are represented in the labor force globally, for 76% of men. Furthermore, an overwhelming majority of women have low-paid salaries, and can’t reach key positions. Studies have proven that gender diversity has significant benefits for business: higher performance, improved reputation, better creativity and innovation.
- ATTEND A WOMEN’S NETWORKING EVENT
If you’re a professional woman, consider volunteering as a mentor for a younger person in your field. Participate in round tables and conferences about women’s challenges.
- DONATE TO A LOCAL WOMEN’S REFUGE
In Lebanon, escaping an abusive domestic situation can be very difficult, and women’s associations and refuges are an essential lifeline for women and children who need to leave. However, those refuges need financial support.
- DO SOMETHING KIND FOR A WOMAN YOU LOVE
Whether it is your mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, girlfriend or friend… why not make them feel special ?
