ANOTHER LANDMARK CLOSING DOWN
In the past few months, it has sadly become common to hear that a place is closing down. But it was particularly bitter, when we heard that the beloved theatre of cinephiles in Lebanon was closing its doors.
Empire Metropolis Sofil was a place that began purely out of a passion for independent cinema, and over the years, it developped into becoming a real landmark, defending and promoting genres that were off the beaten tracks. Sadly, a few days ago, the place had to shut down due to on-going crippling financial difficulties that worsened in October.
What we are left with, at Mondanité, as we face the saddening news, is a bundle of mixed emotions, both sweet and bitter. Sweet thanks to all the memories we share with the place, all the events and premieres we took part in. Bitter that a place with an admirable mission could not be saved, despite all.
Rejoice everyone, though, Metropolis Association is still alive, and they will keep updating us with what’s happening on the independent scene.
